Claudette's Story by Dorcas NKOSSI MAFUTA

This is the story of Mrs. Claudette Caillet who was born in 1934 in Givor, a French commune in the southern suburbs of Lyon.

Her mother died the day of her birth. She was looked after by her nanny Mme.Canard. However she died when Claudette was only 8 years old. After that, she was put in a convent where she spent two years with the nuns. She decided to talk about her youth during the Second World War period.

The period with her nanny
She remembers what happened one day, when she was among Mrs. Canard's friend. The town of Lyon had just been bombed. On the way home, she saw many buildings destroyed. She remembers this shocking picture: that of a dead father and a mother with their baby.

The period with the nuns
She wasn't the only young person with the sisters. She remembers that they were poorly nourished but they felt safe. Sometimes with the nuns, they watched the bombing from a hill. She found that the bombing was beautiful because it lit up the sky. Around the year 1944, the Germans were looking for resistance fighters in the Rhone Alpes region. The Germans believed that the nuns hid resistance fighters in the convent. They grouped everybody in a barn adjoining the convent and some of them pointed their guns at the children. However some Germans were nice and they felt it was horrible to point weapons at children. Some of them showed pictures of their own children to reassure us.
Thereafter, Caludette was sent to Megève to be looked after by foster parents.

The end of the war
The day of the armistice, Claudette heard bells ringing. She was 11 years old when at the end of the war, she found her father.
