Juliette's Story by Coralie JOSSERAND

The name of the person I spoke to is Juliette Josserand. She has always lived in a small village: Manigod, in Haute-Savoie. She gave birth to fourteen children. However, two of them died at the age six months. All this big family lived and my grandmother still lives in a large house, at the top of the mountains, in a house which is called Rutty. They lived in poverty. The father George, was a farmer, and the mum educated her children. Her children behaved very badly. She told us that one day three of them, Christian, Hubert and Isabelle the youngest of the family, played tricks with twenty chicks. They pushed them into a lake. But, they didn’t know that George intended these chicks to become cocks and hens. At this moment, their dad was incredibly angry, and their mum tried to calm her husband down. When she told us what happened this day, she was really touched. Now, her husband has been dead for six years. Now, Juliette has grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

When the region wanted to create a ski resort in La Clusaz, George owned lots of building land and the region had to buy this land. George made a deal with the region, he accepted to give this building land to create their ski resort, but in return, his children and grandchildren could ski without paying for a ski pass. Even if they were poor, they learned how to manage living in poverty. Juliette explained that she has the family she has dreamed of having and even if they lived in poverty, they’re happy and it’s the best thing for her.
